Good News
Was offered my first RN position here in town at the hospital I did my clinical rotations in. I originally had my foot in the door with our county health system, but due to an influx of applicants, they closed their entry level RN application (which is normally always open) by the time I passed boards. I have to admit, I was bummed. It really is as tough out there for new grad RN’s as they...

My Study Plan.
Somebody asked so I deliver. It wasn’t much of a plan really. lol I graduated 12/8/2012. Took live Kaplan review 12/10-12/13. Received my ATT early January, scheduled NCLEX for 1/24, and began studying 1/5. As you can see I had a very slow start lol. It took having my actual exam date to kick me into gear.
Now the live review was helpful. It wasn’t content review, more like teaching...

Mandatory NCLEX Story
Drove out to the city I was testing in the night prior with my fiancé. Before checking in to our hotel room, he took me out for dinner at one of our favorite Filipino spots and he let me buy out the entire stock of junk food from the Filipino market adjacent to the restaurant. It was about 2100 when we finally got to the hotel room. Without hesitation I took off my clothes, threw on an oversized...

75 questions. 1 hour.
Tried the Pearson Vue trick and got the good pop-up.
It helps with the anxiety a smidge. I won’t completely breathe a sigh of relief until I see my name and license number on the BON.
Will update in a few days with my very own NCLEX story. Keep look out!

LaCharity says nursing assistants CANNOT perform blood glucose tests. Kaplan says they CAN. Well then. WELLL then.

Oh gosh, I just got the nervous shits typing out that title.

I get these bouts of confidence when I’m just like, “NCLEX aint nothing, bro! Totally gonna pass it. TOTALLY!” And then 5 minutes later I’m in a fetal position and crying. This is so stressful! I’ve done a live Kaplan review (it was part of my nursing program) and I really don’t know if it did more harm than good?
People never told me that nursing school exams were different from regular biology...

A fourth of the way through!
Just a little update.
As the title says, I’m a fourth of the way through with my final semester of nursing school! I now have a general understanding as to why it is considered the ‘make it or break it’ semester. First of all, it’s a 30 hour work week consisting of one 6 hour lecture and two 12 hour shifts. Secondly, in our past med surg 1 course, we were introduced one...

Whoa whoa whoa!
Why is it never the actual RN’s, but nurse techs that feel the need to tell me that I don’t really want to be an RN?
Really? REALLY??
Most of the time they sound more condescending than helpful. Annoying.

I learned some.
I learned that there is A LOT more paperwork dealing with nursing than I thought.
b1tch-m0b asked: what do you mean that the job market is dire for new nursing grads?

Some news!
So I’m sure a majority of my followers are aware of how dire the job market is for nurses at the current time, especially for inexperienced new grads.
Anywho, I’ve been pretty mum about it for fear of jinxing it, but I’ve been going through a process to try and qualify for a nursing scholarship that would also ensure a job as an RN upon passing boards. It consisted of an...

Started my summer course today..
Oh man, a course that has NOTHING to do with nursing?? It’s surprisingly refreshing. We were already assigned a research assignment of sorts that I accepted wholeheartedly while grinning from ear to ear.
Problem is…while going over the assigned speeches (communications class), the only topics I could think up to do said speeches on were related to nursing……

Seriously.
So an instructor comes in to talk to our class about prepping for our upcoming and final semester of the program.
“This summer do some reading, especially from your Brunner’s med-surg book.”
*raise hand* “What exactly should we focus on in the reading?”
“Oh, just read everything.”
And she wasn’t kidding. She wants us to read the entire baby...

During a simulation..
..banging on the chest of the dummy and yelling, “DON’T FOLLOW THE LIGHT!” does not count as an effective nursing intervention. Just FYI, guys.

Started our peds rotation!
1st day of clinic consisted of me pushing my mini patient down the corridors in a plastic buggy while singing, “They see me rollingggg, they hatinnnnn’. Trying to catch me ridin’ dirtayyy..” ….perhaps I was the only one singing.

The funny thing about pre-requisites..
Any nursing or pre-nursing major knows that there’s a few classes that one must first take before being eligible to sign up for a nursing program. In my school it was anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and English 101. Funny part is there are pre-reqs TO TAKE the pre-reqs, but I digress.
What I’m trying to get at is I did okay during my pre-req days. A minimum of 3.0 was required in...

More free therapy.
So the therapist on the floor just LOVES to do activities with me and my clinic group. Yesterday, our last day on the unit, she decides to do something she called ‘Life Boat.’ Basically we all sat in a circle that was our ‘life boat’ which was slowly sinking. 10 sharks were circling the boat and we only had one choice, throw off 4 people to stay afloat. Mind you, there was...

I'm a pathetic blogger.
It’s just..nothing is going on, guys.
So many people told me that the third semester of my program was going to be totally lax and so far, it’s ringing true. Especially in psych. The study load isn’t so bad and the clinicals aren’t too intense. Managed an A on our first exam and that was with bare minimum studying. YES, I’M STILL SLACKING! In fact, I think that...

Getting into the 4th week of the semester.
I’m only now opening my psych textbook for the first time. Yes, winning.
So far psych has been…interesting. It’s very..dry? It seems ‘therapeutic communication’ is stressed the most during this rotation. So basically, all we are doing is chopping it up with our patients and talking. The only actual skills we perform are the general vitals and med distribution....

Looking through this syllabus for psych..
..and I wanna cry tears of happiness. I know everybody said that psych would be our ‘easy’ course, but this syllabus! THIS SYLLABUS!! Two exams for the entire course. Two exams and then a final. WHAT IS THIS!??! I’m so accustomed to an exam every two weeks. My heart…can’t take this.
…but wouldn’t that be some shit if these exams were the hardest ever?...

I often avoid telling people I'm a student nurse.
Once I do I’m usually assaulted with questions and lists of signs and symptoms. I’ll just shrug and tell them that they should see their doctor. Then they get upset and ask me what’s the point of nursing school if I’m not learning anything.
I swear to God. Next person who does this to me will be thankful at first to have me there listening attentively. And then, at the...

I can feel it now..
..The end of winter break is near.
This is made more apparent by the fact that I purchased my textbooks for next semester. Devastation on my vacation, devastation on my wallet.
Why?? Why is this life????
